In order to comply with the antitrust settlement Microsoft is amending its Windows XP operating system by allowing the installation of rival software.
Consumers will then be able to install non-Microsoft products for tasks such as e-mailing, Internet access and playing digital music.
The free update pack for these new functions will be released later this year.
However the deal, which is part of Microsoft's settlement with the federal government has not been not formally approved yet.
