An Israeli sniper has shot and killed a Palestinian policeman at the besieged Church of the Nativity in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

Palestinians inside the church also said that a second man was wounded by Israeli fire.

More than 200 people, including an unknown number of gunmen, policemen, civilians, monks and nuns took refuge in the church on April 2 after the Israeli army invaded Bethlehem as part of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s “anti-terror” offensive.

The church remains the last point of contention from Israel’s large-scale invasion of the West Bank that began on March 29 after a series of Palestinian suicide bombings.
