Olmert to be asked to form new Israeli govt

Israel’s president will ask acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to form a new government after his centrist Kadima Party won last week’s election, a spokeswoman said today.

Israel’s president will ask acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to form a new government after his centrist Kadima Party won last week’s election, a spokeswoman said today.

President Moshe Katsav will meet Olmert tomorrow and ask him to put together the new government, Katsav’s spokeswoman, Hagit Cohen said.

Olmert’s Kadima Party won the election, but did not get enough support to rule alone.

Olmert announced yesterday that the left-of-centre Labour Party, which supports his plan to withdraw from parts of the West Bank and draw Israel’s final borders by 2010, would be his most senior coalition partner.
