He may have been unsuccessful in his bid for Liam McCarthy but Anthony Nash was back terrorising his fellow goalkeepers yesterday.
He stepped up for his club Kanturk with ten minutes to go, in their Cork IHC quarter-final win over nearby Meelin, to bullet home a twenty-metre free.
Unlike Clare, Meelin went with only six on the line but it wasn’t enough to keep out Cork’s number one, although they were successful a few minutes later as they managed a rare block from another Nash attempt.
We just love the celebration of the Kanturk fans, however Nash’s stunning technique of throwing the ball several metres forward before unleashing a thunderbolt-like shot has lead to calls from certain quarters for the GAA to redefine the act of taking the dead-ball for safety reasons.
Kanturk advanced to a semi-final meeting with Fermoy on a scoreline 2-11 to 1-10 with the help of Nash’s goal.
Nash wasn’t the only goalkeeper to grab the headlines as Carrigtwohill’s Tom Hogan hit an amazing 2-2 in a losing effort in the Cork SHC.
With his side down by seven in injury time Hogan rifled home a free only to be called upon again to blast in a penalty a minute later and with seconds on the watch the stopper held his nerve to point a long range 65’ to force extra-time which they lost.
With all these scoring goalkeepers these days were are forced to ask, are they becoming the most important player in GAA?
