Good news for south's retailers as shoppers stop going North

The number of people opting to do their Christmas shopping in the North has plummeted to 7% - a quarter of what it was in 2008.

An AA Ireland survey of more than 5,500 people shows that since 2008 the overall figure for those travelling across the border for shopping has dropped from 27% to just 7%.

The survey also shows that the amount of shoppers stocking up in Irish retail stores has increased steadily from 69% in 2011 to 77% this year.

The number of people travelling to the UK, other parts of Europe and North America to get gifts has also sharply declined.
