Scottish police divers have recovered the body of a man from a frozen reservoir after he slipped through the ice.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the 19-year-old's body had been recovered from Harlaw Reservoir in Balerno, near Edinburgh.

He confirmed the man's body had been transported by helicopter to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Police launched a rescue operation after the man from the Sighthill area of Edinburgh, who has not been named, slipped under the ice.

Inspector Phil O'Kane said the missing man was with a group of four other men in their late teens when the accident happened.

He said: "They were sitting on the bank and throwing stones into the water when one of them went on to the ice and then went through the ice.

"He was on the surface for a short while, then he disappeared below."

Fire crews, the coastguard and an RAF helicopter all helped with the search and rescue operation, along with a team of police divers from Central Scotland Police's diving unit.
