Ireland has the highest number of young people killed on the roads in the European Union, according to a new study out today.

The European Commission report shows that almost four in 10 people killed in car accidents here are aged between 18 and 25.

Historically, 1997 was the worst year on our roads, with nearly 500 people dying. This was down to 368 last year.

Although the number of road deaths here has steadily declined in the last 10 years, we are still above the EU average.

We also have one of the worst records for seat-belt wearing with under half of our back-seat passengers belting up.
