A popular Turkish folk singer who has millions of fans in Turkey, Greece and the Middle East, has been critically injured in a shooting attack in Istanbul, a doctor said.

A popular Turkish folk singer who has millions of fans in Turkey, Greece and the Middle East, has been critically injured in a shooting attack in Istanbul, a doctor said.

Ibrahim Tatlises was shot in the head and might be partially paralysed, according to Caglar Cuhadaroglu, of Maslak Acibadem hospital.

Police said unknown gunmen attacked the 58-year-old and his spokeswoman, Buket Cakici, early today as they left a television station in a vehicle.

Ms Cakici is in stable condition following an operation on her neck.

The motive for the attack is not clear.

Tatlises also hosts a TV show and has acted in films.
