Frank Williams tonight positioned himself in Ralf Schumacher’s corner as he backed the German to make a “vital” contribution to his team’s fortunes over the final two grands prix of the year.
With Schumacher under fire in certain quarters for his decision to withdraw from Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix, after a lengthy pit stop left him apparently out of points contention, it was left to team principal Williams to defend the driver.
“Let there be no misunderstanding about the team’s commitment to Ralf,” said Williams.
“He will be racing for the team in Japan and Brazil.”
Schumacher has endured a grim season, collecting only 12 points to date and suffering fractured bones in his spine during the US Grand Prix on June 21.
The Chinese GP marked his return to competition, and it had been speculated that his retirement could have been followed by disciplinary action.
However, Williams ruled out forcing Schumacher to give up his seat to test driver Antonio Pizzonia for the closing races of the season.
“Since his recuperation, his work in the car – both testing and racing – has been characteristically quick and consistent,” said Williams, “and his contribution to the championship outcome will be vital.”
