A Mathew Burke-inspired Australia finally defeated New Zealand at Carisbrook Park to retain the Bledisloe Cup with a 25-13 win.
Burke finished with 18 points, including one try, three penalty goals and two conversions as the Wallabies won a Test at Carisbrook for the first time in in 13 attempts.
The victory also gave new coach Eddie Jones his first win in his second game.
Jonah Lomu marked his 50th cap in spectacular style by scoring a try after two minutes but fly-half Tony Brown missed the conversion.
Brown also missed a penalty on his home ground and the errors handed the Wallabies the advantage.
Burke scored a try on 16 minutes and kicked a penalty before half-time to give Australia a 10-5 half-time lead.
Their dominance was extended after 63 minutes, when referee Steve Lander gave a penalty try when Ron Cribb tackled Joe Roff after he had chipped ahead, stopping a certain try.
Despite a try from Jeff Wilson, late penalties by Burke wrapped up the game.
Australian captain John Eales, who is retiring at the end of the Tri-Nations series, endorsed Lander's decision for the penalty try.
He told foxsports.com.au: "Roffy is a very quick bloke and he would have cantered in. We just wanted to win and retain the Bledisloe Cup."
