Alkaased pipped Heart’s Cry in a nail-biting finish to take the Japan Cup in record time in the hands of Frankie Dettori.
The Luca Cumani-trained five-year-old just held the late flourish of Christophe Lemaire’s mount to take a dramatic 25th running of this Group One in Tokyo.
After several agonising minutes the result of the photo finish was announced giving Dettori his third victory in the Japan Cup, following wins on Singspiel (1996) and Falbrav (2002).
And there was a further wait for connections as the stewards held an inquiry but the result was confirmed.
