Gardaí are due to begin their annual St Patrick's Day road-safety blitz today.

Extra checkpoints will be in place as large numbers take to the roads for one of the biggest holiday weekends of the year.

The crackdown will focus on speeding and drink-driving.

Forty-seven people have died in road crashes since the start of year, 18 fewer than in the same period last year.
