Hindu religious leaders have staged a protest over the state of the Ganges River.

They are complaining the water they believe washes away their sins is too polluted.

Hundreds of Hindu holy men have refused to bathe in the river as part of their daily ritual after tests revealed the amount of human and animal waste was 5,000% above the acceptable level.

The river is sacred to Hindus and is 2,740 kilometres long, flowing through eight Indian states.
