Prutton hopes for Saints recall

David Prutton is determined to play his part in Southampton’s survival bid after missing the last 10 games through suspension.

David Prutton is determined to play his part in Southampton’s survival bid after missing the last 10 games through suspension.

The former England Under-21 international returns to reserve team action this evening and has targeted a place in the Southampton squad to face Manchester United in Sunday’s dramatic Premiership finale.

Prutton was handed the hefty suspension for pushing referee Alan Wiley after he was sent off in the Saints’ Premiership draw with Arsenal in February.

“The ban seemed to last for an eternity and I cannot await to play again. I know I have only myself to blame but it has been very frustrating watching helplessly from the sidelines for so long,” Prutton told the club’s official website (saintsfc.co.uk).

“I have done my best to keep fit but nothing compares to playing and hopefully I can do enough tonight to play myself into the squad for Sunday.”

Southampton’s destiny is out of their own hands and even a win over United at the St Mary’s Stadium may not be enough to preserve their top-flight status.

Norwich are in the driving seat having won on Saturday and if they beat Fulham then Southampton will be condemned to relegation for the first time since 1978, along with Crystal Palace and West Brom.
