Newcastle boss Graeme Souness tonight confirmed Rangers defender Jean-Alain Boumsong is among his transfer targets.
The Magpies have made no secret of their intention to find a replacement for Jonathan Woodgate when the transfer window reopens in January and with the £13.4million from his sale to Real Madrid burning a hole in their pocket, they have the cash to make a significant investment.
Boumsong, Celtic’s Bobo Balde, Manchester United’s John O’Shea, Chelsea’s Robert Huth and Nottingham Forest’s Michael Dawson are among the players who have already been tipped as possible targets, but Souness was in Paris last week to watch France’s 0-0 draw with Poland and confirmed his interest tonight.
“I was in Paris last week and I think he’s a very good player,” he said. “He’s with a very good club, a very big club at the moment in Glasgow Rangers.
“We’re looking for defenders to strengthen our squad because we believe we’re short at Newcastle in quality there, and he’s one player we’ve been looking at.
“He, in my opinion, is a quality central defender.”
Boumsong only joined Rangers last summer from Auxerre but the financially-troubled Scottish giants could be tempted by a big offer.
