Helen Mirren believes Russell Brand is an “incredible comedian”.

The Oscar-winning actress – who stars alongside Russell in the upcoming remake of classic 1981 movie ‘Arthur’ – admits working on the film has been unusual, but a role she has relished as she got to work with the British funnyman.

She said: “It’s unlike most other film experience, where you don’t change lines that much. But Russell isn’t a wild cannon.

“He has an incredible comedian’s brain but he pays attention to detail.”

The 65-year-old star also claims she was not a fan of the original movie – which starred Dudley Moore as a drunk heir with no ambition – because it wasn’t “remotely funny”.

She told the Scotsman newspaper: “I just didn’t think a film about a drunken small guy was remotely funny.

“The reality about alcoholics is that they’re boring and tedious, and I’d spent enough nights in pubs with drunken boys to know it was not something I’d ever want to be caught up in.”

“And I particularly objected to the way women were depicted – which was something I felt about most movies I saw back then – as kind of slave-enablers.”

The remake of the original – which also stars Jennifer Garner and Greta Gerwig – has recently been shooting in New York, with Brand seen in various states of undress throughout the filming.
