Boots denies plans to close high street stores

Boots has denied speculation it is planning to make hundreds of its staff redundant by closing high street outlets.

The group was reported to be planning to close up to 100 high street sites and transfer pharmacies to nearby Sainsbury's stores.

This follows a trial with Sainsbury's, launched in November, to open Boots shops within six of its supermarkets.

A spokesman for Boots stressed that the Sainsbury's trial was in its infancy.

He added that group is aiming to increase its presence rather than close stores, contrary to the report in a British newspaper.

"We are not looking to make lots of people redundant," he said.

"The whole reason is to increase our presence in the edge-of-town. It is about growing our edge-of-town presence not about making people in Boots redundant."
