Brave mare Madame Jones - fresh from a hugely popular 12th victory of the year - could attempt to set a new all-time record tomorrow.
She was back on the winning trail at Wolverhampton last night but failed to set a new record because the race was not a handicap.
The six-year-old, who was running in her 55th race of the year, was handy for much of the way in the 11-runner Littlewoods Bet Direct Daily Special Offers Classified Stakes, over seven furlongs.
Madame Jones, ridden by 5lb-claimer Fran Ferris, drifted from 3-1 co-favourite to 9-2 in the market but came with a blistering late run to land the spoils.
Trainer David Evans said: ‘‘I was chuffed. I am very proud of her. I don’t get that emotional but it was nice for everyone else.
‘‘I think the whole racecourse was chuffed. She got a good reception.
‘‘It doesn’t count as the record but she might run three or four times next week so we might get the record then.
‘‘She pretty definitely runs at Southwell on Monday and probably at Wolverhampton on Tuesday.’’
The Southwell race is the southwell-racecourse.co.uk Fillies’ Handicap over one mile and the Wolverhampton event is the £10,000-added attheraces.co.uk Handicap over seven furlongs.
Evans insisted he did not regret not running Madame Jones in the handicap last night for a tilt at the record.
‘‘She probably wouldn’t have got home,’’ he said.
Madame Jones scored by half a length and a head over 14-1 shot Pivotable and 7-1 chance Calling The Shots.
Last Saturday, she equalled the all-time record for the most handicap wins in a British Flat season, with her 11th victory of the year, also at Wolverhampton.
But, because last night’s race was not a handicap, the victory did not count in her attempt to gallop her way into the record books again.
She was entered in the Bet Direct Live TV Football Cashbacks Handicap over one mile and one and a half furlongs, but was taken out of that event.
The mare broke the modern-day Flat handicap record with her tenth win of the year through a gritty performance in the 11-runner Arnold Palmer Handicap over a mile at Nottingham in September.
The feat had not been achieved since 1874.
She now shares the all-time record with two 19th-century handicappers, Misty Morn (1858) and Honesty (1869).
Madame Jones equalled the record of nine handicap wins with a victory at Yarmouth on August 26.
Her other wins this year have come at Southwell (four), Wolverhampton (three) and Nottingham.
The Lycius mare originally shared the nine-handicap record with Chaplins Club, who achieved the feat in 1985 and 1988, Glencroft (1988), Star Rage (1994), Vindaloo (1995), Sihafi (1998) and Nineacres (2000).
Before this year, Madame Jones won three races over six furlongs in 1998 at Nottingham, Goodwood and Chester, making her Flat-race tally now 15.
Evans and Ferris narrowly failed to make it a famous night at Wolverhampton in the next race when 13-2 chance Branston Pickle was beaten into second place by 4-1 shot James Stark in the Littlewoods Bet Direct Party Night Handicap.
The winning distance was three quarters of a length.
