Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has played down speculation about his future in the job, despite reports that the FAI is ready to offer him a pay-off to step aside.

Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has played down speculation about his future in the job, despite reports that the FAI is ready to offer him a pay-off to step aside.

McCarthy insisted last night that suggestions of showdown talks with FAI officials about his future are inaccurate and said he is looking forward to next month's friendly clash with Greece in Athens.

Yesterday, McCarthy revealed that he had called a meeting with the FAI for this week to clarify the present situation and hinted that he would resign if that was considered best for Irish football.
