TV chiefs unsure of Barrymore's future

ITV1 bosses say they have not yet decided when Michael Barrymore will make his television comeback.

ITV1 bosses say they have not yet decided when Michael Barrymore will make his television comeback.

The channel is currently preparing for a new series of My Kind Of Music, but is still gauging public opinion as to when it will be appropriate for him to return.

Barrymore has suffered a turbulent year, after a young man was found dead in his swimming pool following a party at his Essex mansion.

While cleared of any involvement in the death, the entertainer was cautioned for drug offences and has since admitted to indulging in massive drink and drug binges.

He was also badly affected by the death of his beloved mother earlier in the year.

His television career was put on hold while the police investigation into the death of Stuart Lubbock continued but earlier in the month ITV1 confirmed it is planning his television comeback.

But speaking at ITV1's winter launch in London, director of channels David Liddiment says they could not at this stage put a date on Barrymore's return.

"We are preparing for a new run of My Kind Of Music. We have not taken a decision when to make that or when it will be in the schedule, those are judgement decisions to be made over time," he said.

Mr Liddiment added: "Bringing Michael Barrymore back at the right time and in the right way is something we are going to give a lot of thought to."

He added: "At the end of the day the public will decide and make those judgments."
