A review has begun into the length of the jail sentence being served by Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs.
The British Criminal Cases Review Commission says it has started looking at Biggs' 30-year sentence following an application by his legal team.
The review, which is expected to take several months, began as Biggs remains in a stable condition in hospital.
Following the review the CCRC will decide whether to refer his case to the Court of Appeal which would in turn determine whether to reduce the sentence.
The CCRC investigates suspected miscarriages of justice.
Its review of 72-year-old Biggs' case will centre on his sentence only, not his conviction.
Biggs' lawyers submitted an application to the CCRC in July but were told his case was not a priority and it would be five months before they began to examine it.
The Birmingham-based organisation has hundreds of cases waiting to be reviewed.
However, the health of an applicant can lead to a case being prioritised and pushed to the front of the queue.
Biggs' health, however, will have no bearing on the eventual decision on whether his case is referred to the Court of Appeal.
