IRA slams Britain over anti-Catholic violence

The IRA has accused the British Government of allowing violence against Catholics in the North to spiral out of control.

The IRA has accused the British Government of allowing violence against Catholics in the North to spiral out of control.

In its New Year message, published this morning, the republican movement says Britain has refused to confront loyalist paramilitaries conducting a "pogrom" against nationalists in the six counties, particularly in north Belfast.

"Their refusal to bring about a new beginning to policing and their unwillingness to fulfil obligations entered into are stark reminders of the task ahead," the message says.

It also reaffirms the IRA’s commitment to the peace process.

The IRA message acknowledges that the beginning of decommissioning in October has caused tensions within the republican movement.

"While our initiative undoubtedly saved the peace process, we understand and appreciate the great anxiety it has caused to volunteers and our support base," it says.

"Over the years, we have faced many difficult challenges together, but through our commitment to republican objectives we have remained united and have grown in strength."
