Almost 58,500 students are due to get their Leaving Cert exam results later today.

The overall grades are similar to previous years, but with improvements in higher level Irish, Art and German and declines in ordinary level History and Chemistry.

The results will be available in individual schools from 9.30am and on the internet from noon.

Students unhappy with their results can view their papers on August 30/31 to decide if they should appeal.

Education Minister Noel Dempsey has advised students who don’t get the desired results that there are many other options available to them.

He urged these students to talk to guidance counsellors, teachers or parents and consider their options before making any final decision.

The National Parents Council also advised students celebrating their results not to drink too much alcohol and to stay away from drugs.
