Ten miners were killed today by an explosion in a coal mine in southern Poland.
The explosion happened about 2,300 ft underground at the Jasmos mine in Jastrzebie Zdroj, 200 miles south of Warsaw.
It was unclear whether the blast was caused by methane gas or coal dust.
Another 37 other miners were evacuated from the mine. One was believed to be seriously injured.
Today’s accident was the most deadly since 1987, when 18 miners died in an explosion in Myslowice, also in the industrial Upper Silesia region.
Thirty miners were killed in a number of accidents underground last year. The Polish coal industry employs around 130,000 miners.
