Police in Australia believe a body recovered from the water at Brunswick Heads this morning may be that of missing Irishman Niall McDonough.

The 30 year old was last seen by his girlfriend at a backpackers hostel in Byron Bay on June 12 last.

He was going for a walk.

His clothes were found on a park bench near the Cape Byron lighthouse the following day.

An intensive search was launched but it was scaled back in the days following his disappearance.

At around 8.30am local time, a body was recovered from the water at Brunswick Heads.

Police say no formal identification has taken place and a post mortem examination is still underway.

However, they say they are investigating the possibility the body is that of Mr McDonough and they are liaising with his family, who arrived in Australia last week.
