The Department of the Marine has announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening the Irish fishing industry.
The department said an independent economic review would be established to assess fleet structure and available fishing opportunities in the face of increasing EU quota restrictions.
It also said a new grant system would be introduced for fishermen who have to cut back on their fleet and for schemes to promote quality on vessels and in shore-based facilities.
Marine Minister Pat the Cope Gallagher said the measures were part of a plan to ensure a viable future for the Irish fishing industry.
