The Government took in one tenth of its total target for the year in income tax last month.

Exchequer figures show total taxes for the month up 17% on a year ago. Income tax payments were up 27.7%, benefitting from the introduction of the Universal Social Charge last year.

But some €261m in corporation tax taken in last month was originally due for payment in December 2011.

VAT was also up by 3% - reflecting strong consumer spending in November and December - before the hike to 23% at the start of January.
