One of the two Guatemalan Siamese twins who were separated today was later rushed back into the operating theatre.
Maria Teresa Quiej-Alvarez developed a haematoma related to surgery and was taken back into the operating room at 5.17pm Irish time, doctors announced.
"Despite the complication involving Maria Teresa, we feel that the outlook for both twins is positive," said Dr Jorge Lazareff, lead neurosurgeon.
Lazareff said the haematoma was a collection of blood on the surface of the girl’s brain that increases pressure on the organ. Doctors said they were removing the buildup to speed recovery.
The surgery on Maria Teresa and Maria de Jesus Quiej-Alvarez took 20 hours to complete.
