Harney defends embattled PD's record on health and justice

Progressive Democrats leader Mary Harney said she hoped to gain voter support when key reforms in justice and health are progressed before the forthcoming general election.

Progressive Democrats leader Mary Harney said she hoped to gain voter support when key reforms in justice and health are progressed before the forthcoming general election.

The Tánaiste was speaking after a Sunday Business Post Red C opinion poll showed that support for the PDs has fallen by 1% to 2%.

“Reform in health was never going to happen overnight. We are in year two of a five or six-year project,” she said.

“I think by the time of the next election, sufficient progress will have been made so people can see that reform is working and there is no return to the status quo.

“I think people will see at the next general election that we have made major progress in health and justice and the Progressive Democrats will get support on the basis of that.”

The PD leader said she and her Cabinet colleague Minister for Justice Michael McDowell would be holding strategy meetings between now and the resumption of the Dáil to focus the party on a clear campaign agenda.
