Organisers of today's "Reclaim the Streets" protests in Dublin are urging participants to concentrate on enjoying the day peacefully.

Extra gardaí and anti-riot squad will be on duty to ensure public order during the city centre demonstration.

Senior offices say they do not want a repeat of the 2002 Mayday violence, which resulted in several court cases against gardaí and one conviction.

Organisers are hoping to create a more family-friendly, carnival atmosphere at today's anti-capitalist protest.

The rally with be at the Spire at 1.30pm, with the march leaving the Garden of Remembrance at 1pm.
