A subway train derailed in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia today, killing at least 34 people, a regional government spokesman said.

“Initial investigations show it was an accident,” said Vicente Rambla, spokesman for the Valencia regional government.

He said there were at least 34 dead and a dozen people seriously injured following the derailing of the train carriage, which then overturned.

A spokeswoman for Valencia’s emergency services department said one compartment of the train derailed when it was leaving Jesus station in central Valencia. Some 150 people were evacuated from the station.

National radio reported no more people trapped inside the subway.

According to early investigation reports, a tunnel wall collapse onto the carrier was the most likely cause of the accident.

Police cordoned off the area and an emergency mobile hospital was set up at the scene.

TV footage on private TV station CNN+ showed emergency workers carrying injured people on stretchers as bystanders looked on.
