Government urged to increase cigarette prices

The Office of Tobacco Control has claimed that the most effective way of discouraging smoking is to substantially raise the price of cigarettes.

The Office of Tobacco Control has claimed that the most effective way of discouraging smoking is to substantially raise the price of cigarettes.

The office said the Government’s 10p budgetary increase will do little to stop people from smoking.

It said that a doubling of the price would lead to a significant reduction in consumption, particularly among young people.
