The Irish National Teachers Organisation is calling for government action to stem the flow of principal teachers abandoning their jobs.

The INTO is meeting in Dundalk today to discuss what they say is an excessive workload for principals in smaller schools who also undertake teaching duties.

They say it is no longer viable for teachers to carry out principals' duties outside of school hours.

John Carr, General Secretary of the INTO, proposed that groups of small schools should share a full-time principal.
