New laws are to be introduced that will lead to a ban on all cigarette advertising.

All tobacco promotions and sponsorship will be pulled and it will mean that cigarettes have to be sold from beneath the counter in shops.

The Minister for Health, Micheal Martin, said he is happy that Ireland is now moving towards a more restrictive society in relation to smoking.

He added that 7,000 deaths per annum in this country are attributable to smoking, 2,000 of which are lung cancer-related.
