A terrified female garage assistant has been seriously injured in the North.

She was dragged hundreds of yards down the road by the driver of a car which made off without paying for his petrol.

The woman went over to the driver of a silver coloured Hyundai Pony at a filling station in Newtownards, Co Down, to challenge him about non-payment, said police.

She tried to remonstrate with the motorist but he slammed his car door shut trapping her hand and drove off.

The woman was dragged 400 yards down the road until the car stopped at traffic lights and a motorist jumped out and freed her.

Police said the woman suffered serious hand injuries.
