Gerard Greene was in overdrive as he brushed past sporting Ali Carter to set up a revenge match against Ken Doherty at the British Open in Brighton today.

Greene, the 29-year-old from who represents Northern Ireland, needed only 74 minutes to breeze past Carter 5-1 and now goes forward to face Doherty, his second-round conqueror at last month’s LG Cup.

Breaks of 76, 47, 119, 64 and 76 helped Greene reach round two of the world-ranking event with ease and improve his chances of breaking into the game’s elite top 16 next season.

Fergal O’Brien, whose fortunes have dipped since he surprisingly captured the British Open title in 1999, also comfortably booked his second-round place.

The methodical Dubliner, who recovered from 4-2 down to edge John Parrott 5-4 in the final qualifying round of the European Open four days ago, highlighted his 5-2 win over Welshman Anthony Davies with runs of 57, 64, 55, 69 and a superb 133 total clearance.

O’Brien’s next opponent will be Graeme Dott, the number 13 seed.
