A 32-year-old woman was today charged with murder following the death of Protestant teenager in north Belfast.

Thomas McDonald, 16, died after he was knocked off his bicycle by a car just yards from his home on the Whitewell Road.

Two men have been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to the youth’s death.

All three are expected to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court tomorrow.

The headmaster at the school where Thomas was a pupil today described him as a likeable boy with many friends.

Robert Frost, headmaster of Glengormley High School, said: "Today we will be thinking very much of Thomas and his family and the whole school would like to express their sympathy to his family at such a difficult time."

His death has sparked fears of further violence in the Whitewell area, which has seen fierce rioting between rival loyalist and nationalist crowds throughout the summer.

It was the second tragedy to hit Glengormley High School.

In July, another pupil at the same school, Gavin Brett was murdered as he stood with friends close to a Gaelic Football Club in Glengormley.

His murder was claimed by the loyalist Red Hand Defenders, a cover name for the Ulster Defence Association.
