One man is dead and four others injured after a gunman opened fire at a wedding reception in Canada.

Police were having a Christmas party on another floor of the banquet hall when they heard shots.

They say the incident could have been worse had the officers not been in the same building in Vancouver.

The newly-weds, both in their 20s, had invited about 100 guests, the Canoe website reports.

The dead man has been named as 22-year-old Kuljit Singh Buttar. Police say he was well known to them.

Constable Peter Thiessen, who was at the police party, says: "It was utter chaos. It was traumatic. There was blood everywhere. There were five people lying in five different places throughout this hall, bleeding profusely."

Police believe the shooting may be linked to gang-related violence in the Greater Vancouver area.
