Irish Sugar has confirmed closedown schedules for it two factories in Carlow and Cork.

The closures, which will leave over 400 people out of work, are the result of a long and bitter row between Irish Sugar and beet farmers.

The row regarding the price farmers were being paid had escalated in recent days when angry farmers blocked the two sugar factories in Carlow town and Mallow.

The Carlow plant will close today at 5pm, with the Mallow plant ceasing production on Tuesday morning.
