Parts of southern Germany and eastern Austria have been blanketed with up to 15cm of snow for the second weekend in a row.

Parts of southern Germany and eastern Austria have been blanketed with up to 15cm of snow for the second weekend in a row.

The snowfalls come as a freak summer cold spell continues across much of Europe.

The German weather bureau in Munich said many higher roads were closed by the drifting snow with the snowfield reaching down as low as 1,500 metres.

Germany's highest mountain, the 2,964 metre-high Zugspitze, was one of the areas that recorded 15 centimetres of new snow.

In lower lying areas, thick snow flakes have been mixed with heavy rain bringing the temperatures down to freezing.
