Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier was impressed with the way his team stuck to their task tonight to put them in control of their UEFA Cup tie with Auxerre.

Sami Hyypia’s 73rd-minute goal was the difference between the teams in France, giving Houllier’s men an important advantage to take back to Anfield for next Thursday’s return.

Houllier said: “I felt we could have played some better football at times - but we had a plan and the boys showed a lot of discipline, team spirit and character tonight.”

He added: “I thought we had a solid, strong performance in terms of defending because we knew they would make hard for us. I’m pleased and proud of the players.

“We know Sami can score goals with his feet – and it was at the end of a good move.”

Captain Hyypia himself said: “To come here and play against a quality team and come off with a 1-0 win – it’s a great result.

“I’m happy to but it’s going to be a hard game at Anfield.

“We’re not yet through. There are another 90 minutes to come but we’ll do our best.”
