Dublin and Galway to hold Savita memorials as Indian politician calls for change to Irish law

Candlelight vigils will be held in Dublin and Galway later today to remember Savita Halappanavar, who died three weeks ago following a miscarriage at Galway University Hospital.

It is understood the 31-year-old dentist died from blood poisoning. Her husband Praveen has claimed she was denied a termination after the couple requested one a number of times.

The HSE has identified an international expert in obstetrics and gynaecology to join the inquiry team investigating her death.

Meanwhile, a vigil was held in Savita's hometown of Bangalore last night.

Speaking at the event, a member of India's ruling party Mr Maruti said Ireland's laws on abortion must be changed immediately.

"Our demand is they have to change the law immediately. They should not prolong anything," he said.

Today's vigil in Dublin will begin at 4pm in the Garden of Remembrance, and continue with a march to the Dáil via Molesworth St.

In Galway, the vigil will take place from 5pm in Eyre Square.
