Child absenteeism report shows influence of family factors

Children who have a mother who suffers from depression are the most like to miss school for more than 20 days, a report has found.

The ESRI has been looking into the problem of persistent absenteeism in primary schools.

"Children living with a mother who was depressed had an increased likelihood of having a poor attendance record," she said.

"And also children who witness children parental conflict - they were almost twice as likely to be persistent absentees.

"So that shows how important family environment is in terms of child outcomes."
