Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has hit back at the Labour Party after its deputy leader, Brendan Howlin, accused Fianna Fail of dishonesty in some of its claims about the abortion referendum.

Mr Howlin said Fianna Fail had confused the electorate by claiming the proposed referendum would safeguard the legality of the morning after pill, despite the fact that the Referendum Commission said the pill’s status will remain unchanged.

Speaking in Dublin today, the Taoiseach said: "There’s no question of anybody being dishonest about this.

"We’ve made it absolutely clear that if the referendum is passed that any inconsistencies, any difficulties that might have been there on the criminal cases [will be] removed and that was the argument.

"There is no difficulty on this. Really, what Brendan Howlin and others who are trying to put confusion into people are trying to find what is a very straightforward question: Do you want a liberal abortion scheme in this country or do you not?"
