Trulli keeps Monaco fourth place

Italy’s Jarno Trulli will keep his fourth place in last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix after a further examination of the electronic unit on his Renault.

The unit, which forms part of the car’s launch control system, failed a mandatory post-race technical inspection after the race in Monte Carlo because a seal was missing.

But after a further analysis at Renault’s factory this morning, the component was found to be legal.

Trulli remains in 11th place in the drivers’ championship after scoring his first points of the season in Monaco while Renault also stay fourth in the manufacturers’ standings on 11 points, the other eight having been scored by Britain’s Jenson Button.

FIA, the sport’s world governing body, said in a statement today the electronic unit had to be rechecked because a seal was missing.

‘‘Certain components are routinely checked at the beginning of the season to ensure that they have no illegitimate function,’’ said the statement.

‘‘A seal is then placed on the unit to confirm it has been checked.

‘‘There is no regulation requiring the seal to be in place..... but its absence means that the unit has to be re-checked.

‘‘In the case of this particular component the checks could only be carried out away from the circuit, rather like checking an engine.’’
