Hayes: Full tax won't be paid until 2014

The Junior Finance Minister Brian Hayes expects we'll only have to pay half our annual amount of property tax next year.

The Junior Finance Minister Brian Hayes expects we'll only have to pay half our annual amount of property tax next year.

It emerged yesterday that the new measure won't be introduced until July 2013.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan yesterday rejected IMF proposals to set the new tax at 0.5% of the property's value. That could have seen people paying an average of €600.

Hayes says whatever the final amount will be, we won't have to pay it in full until 2014.

“That’s the intention. This will be done on a half-yearly basis from 2013 to make sure the system is fully in place.

“It will be operated through the Revenue commissioners.”
