Gardaí have launched a murder investigation in Cork, after a fatal stabbing in the city this morning.

Gardaí have launched a murder investigation in Cork, after a fatal stabbing in the city this morning.

31-year-old Mark Hanlon died after he was stabbed on Infirmary Road at about 2am.

The investigation was upgraded to murder after the results of a post mortem this afternoon showed he had died as a result of a knife wound to his chest.

Gardaí are continuing to question a man and a woman in their 20s, who were arrested close to the scene soon after.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who was in the area this morning to contact any garda station.
