A group of leading academics has come out against the new Project Maths syllabus, saying it will lead to lower standards.

Project Maths is being rolled out to all first year students and fifth year students this September.

The group said Project Maths will not only dumb-down maths at second level, but it will have a detrimental long-term effect on science and engineering teaching at all levels.

The academics also said the new syllabus will severely damage the reputation of Irish universities as well as Ireland's international competitiveness.

Fine Gael TD Mary Mitchell-O'Connor, who is a former school principal, has raised her concerns over Project Maths with the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn.

However, she denied there is any hint of a rift between her and the Minister.
