Ashlee Simpson starved herself while attending New York City's prestigious School of American Ballet, because she was desperate to compete with other aspiring ballerinas.

Simpson attended the school when she was 11 and struggled to cope with the brutal training regime.

She recalls: "I wouldn't say I had a serious eating disorder, but I definitely touched on it. I would eat half a Nutri-Grain (granola) bar and some BlowPops (lollies) and call it a day. I was super-skinny."

The Pieces Of Me singer's parents came to visit her from Texas and were shocked by her gaunt appearance.

After her parents convinced her to eat something substantial, Simpson made the decision to return to her normal food intake.

She adds: "I got some steak and French fries and stuff, and I never went back to that place."
