The garda who was accidentally shot by a colleague in Co Laois on Friday, will be laid to rest on Tuesday.

The funeral of Detective Sergeant John Eiffe, 40, will take place in Co Meath.

A private ceremony will be held in his native village of Ratoath.

Gardai are continuing to question the four men arrested after Friday's foiled bank robbery in Abbeyleix, in which Eiffe was accidentally shot dead.

The circumstances, in which the detective sergeant was killed by a colleague, are still not clear.

The four men had their periods of detention extended and are expected to be charged sometime today.

They are being held in Tullamore, Abbeyleix and Portlaoise.
